Preparation Guide for the Watchman Position with MSF Belgium (Doctors Without Borders) – Cox’s Bazar (Ukhiya)

1. Understand the Role and Responsibilities
• Read the job description carefully and note every duty: access control, perimeter patrols, traffic management, securing doors and windows, light checks, cleaning and garden maintenance, equipment upkeep, fuel monitoring, generator and pump operation, fire‑extinguisher awareness and assistance with loading/unloading.
• Relate each task to the MSF security protocols you will need to follow. Knowing the exact expectations will help you answer scenario‑based interview questions confidently.

2. Review Required Qualifications and Desired Skills
• Minimum education: 8th grade pass.
• Age: 18 years or older.
• Experience: at least 2 years in security or guard work, preferably with an NGO/INGO.
• Languages: fluent in Bengali and the Chittagonian dialect; basic English reading and speaking is a plus.
• Technical abilities: basic mechanical knowledge, handling of generators, pumps, diesel/petrol tanks, batteries, radios and fire‑extinguishers.
• Personal attributes: teamwork, behavioral flexibility, commitment to MSF principles, reliability and integrity.

3. Strengthen Language Skills
• Practice speaking and writing simple sentences in English – you may be asked to write a short note or explain a procedure.
• Review common security‑related vocabulary in Bengali and Chittagonian to ensure you can give clear instructions to visitors and teammates.

4. Refresh Technical and Mechanical Knowledge
• Review the operation of small diesel generators: start‑up sequence, shutdown, recording operating hours, basic troubleshooting.
• Study the basics of water‑pump control panels and how to check fuel levels safely.
• Learn the correct way to test, maintain and replace batteries for torches and radios.
• Familiarize yourself with fire‑extinguisher types, placement, inspection tags and the “PASS” technique (Pull, Aim, Squeeze, Sweep).
• Practice simple garden tasks such as mowing, pruning and waste collection – these may be part of daily duties.

5. Physical Fitness and Personal Appearance
• The role involves standing for long periods, walking patrol routes and occasionally lifting moderate loads. Incorporate daily walking or light jogging, and practice lifting items up to 20 kg safely.
• Keep a clean, tidy appearance. Wear modest, comfortable clothing suitable for outdoor work and ensure any required uniform is clean and ironed.

6. Documentation and Paperwork
• Prepare a printed copy of your national ID card (Bangladeshi citizens only).
• Gather certificates that prove at least 8th‑grade completion and any security‑guard or mechanical training you have attended.
• Compile reference letters from previous employers, especially from NGOs or security posts, highlighting reliability, punctuality and adherence to protocols.
• If you have a medical certificate indicating fitness for duty, include it.

7. Knowledge of MSF Values and Operations
• Read about Médecins Sans Frontières’ humanitarian mission, core principles (neutrality, impartiality, independence) and the history of its work in Bangladesh since 1992.
• Understand why security is a critical component of humanitarian assistance – be ready to explain how your role protects staff, patients and medical supplies.

8. Anticipate Interview Scenarios
• “A visitor arrives without prior authorization. How do you handle the situation?” – Emphasize checking identification, contacting the administration team, and guiding the person to reception.
• “During a night patrol you notice a broken security light. What steps do you take?” – Mention reporting to the line manager, noting the location, and securing the area until repaired.
• “The generator fails while a power‑dependent medical device is in use.” – Outline immediate actions: switch to backup power, inform technical staff, record the incident, and follow safety procedures.
• “You observe a colleague leaving a post unattended.” – Explain the importance of handover, reporting the breach, and ensuring continuous coverage.

9. Prepare Questions for the Recruiter
• Ask about the daily shift schedule, handover procedures and any specific training MSF provides for watchmen.
• Inquire about the reporting hierarchy, communication channels (radio frequencies, emergency contacts) and the frequency of equipment maintenance checks.
• Clarify the expectations regarding the festival bonus eligibility and the medical allowance for dependents.

10. Practical Logistics
• Confirm the exact address: 1754, Arista Villa, beside Patabari Buddhist Temple, Ukhiya, Cox’s Bazar.
• Plan your travel route to arrive at least 15 minutes early for any written test or interview.
• Bring a pen, notebook, photocopies of the documents listed above and the salary expectation (Tk 31,000 per month) for reference.

By following these preparation steps you will demonstrate to the selection panel that you possess the technical competence, language ability, physical stamina and commitment to MSF’s humanitarian values essential for the Watchman position. Good luck!
